I was planning to start this blog rolling with some thoroughly thought-out opening post about the state of the field of archaeology, or why history is important to me and what it can teach us about our present world. Unfortunately, I find myself out of time and scrambling on the night before departing on my summer adventures, so I will have to limit this post to: WELCOME!
In the morning I am leaving Los Angeles for Rome, where I will board the Voyages to Antiquity cruise ship as a Guest Lecturer (http://us.voyagestoantiquity.com/speaker.html). For 5 weeks I will sail with them through the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Aegean, visiting sites of historical interest, speaking on topics ranging from Prehistoric Aegean art and archaeology to Norman Architecture on Sicily, and in general having a great time. I am not sure what my internet access will be like while on board, but I will try to write here as regularly as possible. I wish I could take you all along!
